"On October 20th we retained Linick Marketing Research (LMR) to calculate and quantify the directory and online database markets of the Market Research Pilot Study in terms of market dollar potentials using industry data. A total of 42 respondents (of the total 260 used in the analysis of the study) indicated they use outside services to maintain their publications base in electronic form. A list of ten questions were created based on the Pilot’s Study’s 34% response to a two-sided mail questionnaire survey to key directory and online database editors. Interviews were conducted with 28 people (out of a possible 42) representing organizations who use outside services to maintain their databases. LMR had less than 3 1/2 days to interview 42 respondents. The results of their telemarketing research uncovered two potential multi-million dollar profit centers: eastern US directory producers who use service bureaus for both composition and typesetting services only.

Linick’s marketing research method of calculating market potential for our product lines was based on correlating company sales with published industry data reflecting buying power of various market segments. The resulting data represented an area’s share of purchasing strength for each product in terms of current and future use in the market place.

In summary, without the expertise and assistance from LMR, our impossible 3 1/2 day deadline to reach respondents would never have been achieved. With under a ten thousand dollar budget we were able to quantify a multi-million dollar directory market and gain other extremely valuable information necessary for us to compete favorably in the market place.

      In July a Market Research Pilot Study was initiated to gain market information concerning the Directory and Online Data Publishing market. A questionnaire was sent to approximately 1000 publishers. A 32% response was achieved.

      Using the survey results, the directory market was quantified. Those eastern United States directory producers who use outside services for both composition and typesetting is conservatively estimated at $9.3 million. Those who use outside services for typesetting only is also conservatively estimated at $34 million.
